Non Surgical Gum Disease Treatment in Virginia Beach, VA
Although brushing and flossing at home and regular dental cleanings and exams at our Virginia Beach dentist office, can help ward off gum disease, you need to make an appointment with Dr. J. Wesley Anderson, Jr., DDS immediately if you’re experiencing symptoms or problems with your gums. Dr. Anderson’s gum disease treatment can help save your teeth and restore your oral health.
What is gum disease?
A non-surgical periodontal therapy, is a fancy way of saying a deep cleaning. The reason a patient would need a deep clean is they have active gum disease. Gum disease sounds simple. It doesn’t always hurt. You can’t always see it but there are signs that it is there. We take measurements with a little gum ruler, if you will, a periodontal probe. It sounds awful but it’s basically measuring if there is any bone loss due to gum disease. We’ll go in there, we’ll numb our patients up so that we can do the cleaning comfortably. It’s not required but we want them to be comfortable. What we do is we try to clean off the barnacles. Just as the barnacles do, it does irritate and the gums become very inflamed.
Do you have bad breath you can’t get rid of? Do your gums bleed or feel tender when you brush your teeth? Do your teeth feel sensitive or even loose? You should call Dr. Anderson. You might be suffering from gum disease, or periodontal disease.
Gum disease begins with plaque buildup and can quickly become an overgrowth of bad bacteria that leads to bleeding, soreness, and swelling. Your gums hold your teeth in place, so if your gum disease is left untreated, it can lead to loose teeth and even tooth loss. In addition, gum disease has been linked to more serious health issues such as stroke, heart disease, and diabetes.
What is nonsurgical gum disease treatment?
Nonsurgical gum disease treatment is done in the comfort of our office under local anesthesia. Your teeth will be deep-cleaned by Dr. Anderson through scaling and root planing.
First, he’ll scrape away any plaque that’s irritating your gums. Your gums will be cleaned above and below the gumline. Next, Dr. Anderson will smooth rough spots on your tooth roots. This does two things:
- Removes bacteria
- Gives your gums a healthy, smooth surface to cling to
